Has the existence of the internet been a net positive or a net negative for society?
Go.

Are we defining the internet as just the internet or are we throwing in the world wide web as well?

Net positive. Relatively free dissemination of knowledge and information, simplification of global communication (via both text and voice), ability for groups to organize themselves (Arab Spring).
Oh, and let’s not forget porn.

I mean internet in colloquial terms, not technical terms. Basically anything and everything online.

Positive. Makes getting rid of old mindsets quicker. Brings a global attitude and standard into the mix. As a planet, the majority wants peace. Internet has defiantly accelerated a chance at world peace since we are all connected, but it’s still a long way.

Absolutely positive.
Comment sections and divisions aside, it’s allowed sharing of knowledge like nothing else before it.
You can find out about anything in the world (for the most part) with a device in your pocket.

Facebook wasn’t around until I was at the tail end of college, and I am very grateful for that fact.

Positive, it simultaneously brings out the best in us and the worst in us. I think, as a whole, we have more good in us than negative.

What criteria are we using for “positive” and “negative”?

As with anything it depends how you use it. Been great for people with talent thats popular enough to make a living but not enough for mainstream media. Think small web car shows for example. I feel im exposed to more due to internet. Found books, movie and TV that expanded my mind through it.
Social media can be good but can also rot your brain if its used only for negative gossip, but previous generations could do the same with tv and gossip mags anyway.

Mixed bag.
The available information is amazing. The available misinformation is staggering.
One thing that is funny is there has always been “that guy”. Pre-internet “that guy” was the one who knew it all and don’t you dare contradict him. He got his knowlege from a guy that knows a guy. With internet “that guy” is alive and thriving because he saw it on the innernet. And he’s as bloody irritating as ever.

Society as a whole, not sure. It’s certanly driven changes that will ultimately be positive in a lot of places, but for developed countries (or maybe just America) it’s tipping to negative. In the early ages of internet it was looking promising, but now I’m not so sure. With all the social media, SEO, and other bullshit, it’s much more difficult to actually find useful information IMO. It’s just a place for people to bitch now.

Too soon to tell.
I heard a great comparison to cheap books from the printing press and the explosion of information in 1500s leading to all the religious wars in the 1600s. Mixed with overpopulation and a global competition for resources, I think things are going to only get crazier.

Well, Jcarr based on your photo you’ve found on the internet (c wut I did there) I think its been positive.
plus oppositelock wouldn’t be here if there was a ton of bad experiences using the internet. I still go to the library, but its way easier to pull up the periodic table of elements online or finding the correct amount of moons Saturn has than scouring a book. (Saturn has no fixed number of moons BTW lol)

It’s been a net (heh) good. Sure it’s let a lot of weird/unimaginably awful people into the open, but they’ve always been there. And the benefits of communication, easy access to information, and cat gifs outweigh the negative aspect of making you want to mercy-suicide whenever you gaze at the collapsing star of outrage that is the Youtube comments section.

All of the world’s knowledge at our fingertips, and we use it to endlessly share that photoshopped picture of Hillary with Bin Laden like it’s real.
10/10 net loss. Don’t believe me? spend an hour reading YouTube comments.
